DIE ZUKUNFT DER MITTE: URBANE TRANSFORMATION ALS GEMEINSCHAFTSAUFGABE

Städte befinden sich im Wandel – und mit ihnen die Frage, wie wir unsere Lebensräume gestalten wollen. Beispiele aus Graz, der Steiermark, Österreich und der Schweiz belegen: Zukunftsfähige Orts- und Stadtkerne entstehen nicht durch einzelne Projekte, sondern durch langfristige Prozesse, die räumliche Qualität, soziale Teilhabe und öko-logische Verantwortung verbinden. Die Smart City Graz zeigt, wie ehe-malige Industrieareale zu lebendigen Quartieren werden können, wenn In-novation, Mobilität und öffentlicher Raum zusammengedacht werden. Gleichzeitig machen Debatten um Bodenverbrauch, Leerstand und Zersiedelung sichtbar, wie weitreichend planerische Entscheidungen wirken. Erfolgreiche Entwicklung von Zentren – ob in St.Gallen, Wien oder kleinen Gemeinden – gelingt dort, wo Politik, Verwaltung, Wirtschaft und Zivilgesellschaft gemeinsame Ziele formulieren und Verantwortung teilen. Es braucht klare Rahmenbedingungen, aber ebenso Offenheit für Experimente, Zwischennutzungen und kreative Beteiligung.

Projekte wie die „Stadtdenkerei“ oder lokale Quartiersmanagements zeigen, dass Veränderung oft bei der Wahrnehmung beginnt: beim Wiederentdecken des Bestehenden und der Bereitschaft, Räume gemeinsam weiterzuentwickeln.

Dieser Tagungsband zum Symposium 2025 lädt dazu ein, Stadtentwicklung als lernenden Prozess zu verstehen – als Arbeit an der Mitte unserer Lebens-räume. Er macht Mut, Ortskerne nicht nur zu planen, sondern aktiv zu gestalten: für lebendige, widerstandfähige und soziale Zentren der Zukunft.

THE FUTURE OF THE CITY CENTRE:  URBAN TRANSFORMATION AS A COLLECTIVE TASK

Cities are constantly changing, and this raises the question of how we want to shape our living environments. Examples from Graz, Styria, Austria, and Switzerland show that sustainable town and city centres are not created by individual projects, but rather through long-term processes combining spatial quality, social participation, and environmental responsibility.

Smart City Graz demonstrates how former industrial sites can be transformed into thriving neighbourhoods by considering innovation, mobility and public spaces as a whole. Meanwhile, debates about land use, vacant properties and urban sprawl highlight just how far-reaching the impact of planning decisions can be. Successful urban development, whether in St.Gallen, Vienna or smaller municipalities, flourishes where politicians, the public sector, businesses and civil society set common goals and share responsibility. Not only do we need clear guidelines, but we also need to be open to experimentation, temporary uses and creative participation. Projects such as the Stadtdenkerei and local quarter management initiatives demonstrate that change of-ten begins with perception, through rediscovering existing resources and fostering collaboration to further develop spaces.

This symposium-related 2025 edition invites us to view urban development as an ongoing learning process, taking place at the heart of our living environments. It inspires us not only to plan town centres, but also to actively shape them into vibrant, resilient and inclusive hubs for the future.
